North Jersey Man Drowns At Spring Lake Beach: Police
An Essex County man drowned in the ocean at a beach along the Jersey Shore, authorities said. Spring Lake police responded to the beachfront near St. Clair Avenue for a swimmer in distress at around 2:05 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, the department said in a news release. The first officers at the scene found a man floating face down in the surf and he was pulled out of the water for life-saving measures. Trooper Dies During Training: Officials
A New Jersey State Police trooper has died suddenly, the department said. Trooper II Marcellus E. Bethea, who worked in Troop D at the Moorestown station, died during training, Colonel Patrick J. Callahan said. Bethea was an eight-year NJSP veteran and was a member of the 156th State Police Class. According to New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin, Bethea had been training to join the TEAMS Unit, an emergency response unit "prepared to handle extra ordinary police emergencies," the NJSP website says. A firefighter, a police officer, and a civilian were hospitalized in a fire in Lakewood caused by improperly discarded smoking material early Saturday, May 4, authorities said. An Atlantic County man was accused of running a large drug-packaging operation inside a home with five children, authorities said. Truck Bursts Into Flames Near Route 287
Multiple fire departments descended on Somerset County on Friday, May 3, after a tractor trailer caught fire, sending plumes of smoke into the sky. Firefighters responded to Union Avenue near Route 287 in Finderne and were able to extinguish the tractor trailer fire along with three additional cars on the trailer, the Finderne Fire Department said on Facebook. A tractor trailer was engulfed in flames in Finderne. Finderne Fire Department Facebook Manville EMS and the Somerset County Haz-Mat team also responded, firefighters said.
