Vandalism Doesn't Stall Briarcliff Little League

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – Arthur Hardy said he never would have expected the odd start to his first season as Briarcliff Little League’s new commissioner.

“I don’t know exactly what happened, but we did our last-minute check of the fields for Opening Day and arrived at Ryder Park around 6 p.m. to find the lock to the dugout shed where we keep the equipment had been jammed up with crazy glue,” Hardy said. “And we found a couple of other locks jammed up, too. Obviously, we don’t know who did it or why, but it wasn’t the start to the season we were hoping for.”

After filing a police report, Hardy and Ossining Parks and Recreation officials assisted in freeing up the doors so that Saturday’s Opening Day could start on time. Hardy said he hopes the vandalism isn’t a sign of things to come for the season, noting that Ryder Park in Ossining was the only field vandalized. The Briarcliff Manor Police Department wasn't immediately available for comment Saturday.

“It’s not going to bring anybody down and we’re not going to let it stop our season,” Hardy said. “We got to the fields early in the morning and made sure things were fine, and the rest of Opening Day was great.”

Hardy added that he hopes he can do a serviceable job replacing Briarcliff Little League past President Pat Maietta.

“He was a great commissioner who’s been doing this a long time, and it’s an honor to try to fill those shoes,” Hardy said. “It was great getting to watch him throw out the first pitch this morning, and it was the perfect start to the season.”
