SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Briarcliff High School student Jack Zimmerman took the top spot recently in the New York State Track and Field Division II Championships' shot put competition, according to a statement from the school district.
Zimmerman, along with teammates Caroline Pennacchio and Ryan Gallagher, competed against other high school track athletes at the tournament in Syracuse on June 10-11, according to the district.
"Please join me in congratulating our state qualifying athletes on a fantastic spring track season," said Coach Wendi Bean. "Jack, Caroline and Ryan competed against the best athletes in the state and many of the best athletes in the country."
Zimmerman’s shot put distance of 58 feet, 5 1/2 inches beat his previous personal best and the school record, which stood at 57 feet, according to the district.
Pennacchio earned ninth place in the 3000-meter championship race while Gallagher took 11th place in the 3200-meter championships, according the district, which added that Zimmerman also placed ninth in the boys' 3000-meter competition.
