Briarcliff Teacher Yelena Silverman Speaks At Literary Conference

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. -- Briarcliff High School teacher Yelena Silverman took her love of teaching science on the road to the 19th annual Rockland Literary Extravaganza Professional Development Conference, held Oct. 18 at her alma mater, St. Thomas Aquinas College.

At the conference, Silverman led a workshop geared toward teachers of Grades 3-12. It focused on reading and writing strategies to support students of all ability levels in deepening their understanding and appreciation of core science content, while developing key science literacy skills.

In her presentation to area educators, Silverman addressed the relationship between the Common Core Standards in New York and the Next Generation Science Standards. She emphasized that integrating the two into lesson plans can help students achieve higher scores on standardized tests, as well as develop them into college-ready independent learners and discerning consumers of science resources.

Silverman recently received the Fellows New Teacher Award from the Science Teachers Association of New York State.
