The four candidates set to run for two seats on the Board of Education are set to give brief introductions of themselves and speak to residents in the community during the special meeting at 8 p.m. May 15 at the Briarcliff Middle School Theater.
Current Board President Sal Maglietta and Trustee Jonathan Satran will join newcomers Paul Wasserman and Louis Linder during the candidate forum. Audience members will have the opportunity to submit questions in writing prior to the start of the session. The forum also will be broadcast live on Briarcliff's local access television station.
Briarcliff Manor PTA co-chairs Nora Johnson and Barbara Hooper said they felt it was very important that residents come out to meet the candidates.
“Board trustees serve for three years and make decisions regarding our children's education, safety, and development, as well as our finances,” the two said in an email to The Daily Voice. “They make these decisions in the best interests of our children and our community. Voters should educate themselves as to what each of the candidates stands for, so that on May 21 they elect the two individuals they feel will do the best job.”
Below are brief bios on each of the four candidates. The Daily Voice will publish individual profiles of each candidate prior to the election.
Jonathan Satran works as a financial analyst a for Credit-Suisse and was appointed to the Board of Education to replace former Board Member Rosella Ranno last year. Satran has been a Briarcliff Manor resident for more than 10 years. He has two children in the district. Prior to serving on the board, Satran volunteered on the district’s ad hoc facilities committee.
Paul Wasserman has been a Briarcliff Manor resident for more than 22 years. His daughter, Danielle, graduated from Briarcliff High School in 2010 and his son, Eric, is a junior at Briarcliff High School. He also has a daughter, Jolie in fourth grade. In 2001-2002 the Wassermans and other parents helped prevent the Millennium Pipeline from being placed within 75 feet of the Todd School. Wasserman has served on the School District’s Code of Conduct Committee, Facilities Committee, Budget Committee, Curriculum Committee and several other civic organizations in the community.
Louis Linder has seen two of his children graduate from Briarcliff High School and has a third who is in eleventh grade. Linder has worked as a technology program director and chaired the Board of Education's energy subcommittee last year. Linder is also the treasurer of the People's Caucus of Briarcliff Manor.
Sal Maglietta is the incumbent Board of Education president. He has lived in Briarcliff Manor for more than 17 years. He has served as a member of the Board of Education for the past three years.
