Wendy Yu has been named as a semifinalist in the program, which saw 1.6 million students in more than 22,000 high schools across America enter the competition by taking last year’s Preliminary SAR / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

In total, Yu is one of just 1,600 students to earn semifinal status. To become a finalist, Yu and the New Rochelle High School will submit a lengthy scholarship application, providing judges information regarding her academic record, employment, academic accolades, school and community activities and leadership abilities.

According to the district, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed by a teacher or administrator, write an essay and finish with strong SAT scores.

Yu said that she is hopeful of studying biomedical sciences when she graduates from New Rochelle in an effort to help change the world.

“It is a wonderful feeling to have my hard work throughout high school pay off, and of course I am extremely grateful to my teachers for teaching me everything that has made it possible for me to attain the position of semifinalist,” she added.

“After high school, I plan on majoring in the biomedical sciences, where I will work diligently to expand horizons in medicine and hopefully improve overall health. There is so much to be done and discovered in the rest of this century, and I hope my academic curiosity will allow me to take part in these new discoveries.”
