The fire took place early Monday morning at a three-story home at 25 Secor Road and left 11 people homeless. Joseph Agostinelli, assistant building inspector, confirmed the village was investigating whether the home was an illegal boarding house but declined to comment further. Agostinelli referred questions to Village Manager Richard Leins, who is on vacation.
The fire erupted in the bathroom of a basement apartment. According to the Building Department, no apartments are allowed in the basement.
The Ossining Fire Department is also investigating the cause of the fire and declined comment pending the results of the investigation.
No one was injured in the fire. The home housed five families, eight adults and three children. Cleanup crews are currently at the site.
Sleepy Hollow, Croton, and Briarcliff Fire Departments assisted the Ossining Fire Department in fighting the fire.
