Briarcliff Police Crack Down On Mailbox Vandalism

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – The Village of Briarcliff Manor Police Department is asking for the public’s help in taking a stand against knocked-down mailboxes.

Briarcliff Manor residents have reported dozens of cases of mailboxes being destroyed or vandalized within the last year and Briarcliff Manor Police Chief Norman Campion said there have been at least six new reports within the last month. While police have no suspects in the dozens of incidents, Campion is asking the public to offer any tips that could help police put an end to the vandalism.

“This is an unfortunate rite of passage here in Briarcliff and we typically see this type of criminal mischief around the April, May and June time period,” Campion said. “In incidents like this it’s important that the community tell us what they hear. Because that’s how we’re going to find the people who are responsible for this type of damage.”

Campion noted that the police department has limited resources to cover the village without any help from residents.

“It’s difficult for a police officer to be in the right place at the right time,” Campion said. “Keep your eyes out. If you see or hear someone talking about it, sometimes those pieces of information are important. I know people may not want to tell us the names of the individuals, but that is really the only way we can move forward is if we find someone who might know something.”

Philip Zegarelli, Briarcliff Manor’s village manager, recently asked for the public’s help in his Village Manager Report.

“We’ve gotten some tips lately but this mailbox bashing goes back decades,” Zegarelli said Tuesday. “It might be thought of as cute or fun or like a prank but it isn’t. It’s really a punk attack on people’s private property.”

Zegarelli said he believes the vandalism is widespread throughout the village.

“People are very attuned to it and people are just basically fed up with it,” he said. “We want people to help and if we get some help we’re going to nail this thing down.”
