Campion's suspension was approved at Wednesday's village board meeting. The board adjourned the meeting and reconvened as the Board of Police Commissioners to approve the suspension, according to the agenda. Lt. Donald Gorey is currently leading the police department, according to Village Manager Philip Zegarelli.
The village decided to pursue disciplinary charges against Campion in August, according to the agenda but negotiated a resolution to avoid the cost, time, and risk of hearings and potential litigation.
Zegarelli and Mayor Lori Sullivan declined to comment on the reason for Campion's suspension, citing New York Civil Right Law section-50a, which precludes officials from discussing police related discipline matters.
"We as a board moved forward with a very difficult course of action that not one of us took lightly," Sullivan said. "The matter is a personnel matter concerning an employee . We as a board are committed to preserving the integrity of the process and respect for the employee."
Campion could not be reached for comment.
