BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. -- Michael Garcia has resigned as chief of the Briarcliff Manor Fire Department after the village said it would be investigating inconsistencies in the fire department's books.
Village Manor Philip Zegarelli confirmed Garcia's resignation and said a forensic accountant will be starting tomorrow to study financial records. An investigation began last week.
"He has full reign to look at anything that says fire department," Zegarelli said. "The integrity of the investigation is the most important thing."
Zegarelli said despite Garcia's resignation, the department will remain safe and secure.
"The transition will be seamless," Zegarelli said. "Services will not be interrupted."
Peter Fulfree was named interim chief following Garcia's resignation.
