The State of New York is requiring all Basic STAR exemption receivers to re-register with the New York State Tax Department by Dec. 31.

The move is an attempt to thwart property owners who have been filing fraudulent STAR exemption applications for more than one property.

Penalties for double filings have been increased from $100 to $2,500, and those who are found out may have to repay benefits going back up to six years.

Registration began on Aug. 19, and one can register online by visiting tax.ny.gov.

Senior Citizens who qualified and received the Enhanced STAR are not affected by the new registration requirement.

The State will be mailing applications to all current holders of the Basic exemption.

If seniors have any questions, call the state at 518 457-2036.
