BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. Residents in Briarcliff Manor might notice discolored water in their homes this week, village officials said.
The third phase of the Village of Briarcliff Manors Hydrant Flushing Program started Monday morning and is scheduled to continue from about 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through March 23. Department of Public Works crews are set to flush individual hydrants off water mains in order to remove slight sediment buildup in the pipes from the winter, said Village Manager Philip Zegarelli.
The discolored water is not harmful to people, Zegarelli said, adding residents may want to limit laundry usage during the day.
You couldn't ask for better weather and this will be the first time weve flushed the entire system in many years, Zegarelli said Monday. Over time, sediment builds up and by flushing it at a higher pressure, you sort of blow it out and discharge that in the dead ends of the system.
Zegarelli issued a release notifying residents of the flushing program. The areas to be flushed, according to the release, are Scarborough Station, River, Albany Post Roads (Route 9), and all side streets including: Linden Circle, Beechwood Way, Creighton, Woodlea and Country Club Lanes, Ivanhoe Place, Union and Requa Streets. Although previously scheduled for this week, our water department was not able to reach these street hydrants. Thereafter Sleepy Hollow Road (portion in the Town of Mount Pleasant) east from Albany Post Road (Route 9) and Tower Hill Road will be serviced.
Zegarelli added a note in the release that the discolored water "has contained no harmful bacteria."
Residents can expect discolored water at any time (but particularly) during the day starting from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., he said in the village manager report. Please understand that you may wish to alter such activities such as your laundry routine: avoiding these time periods in particular. However, even if discolored, continuing laboratory testing has indicated that in the past the water has contained no harmful bacteria.
