YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – Thousands of animal lovers are expected to descend on Yorktown Heights this weekend for the eighth annual SPCA of Westchester Walkathon and Pet Fair.

Westchester County’s largest pet-related event includes games, activities and crafts from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at FDR State Park in Yorktown Heights. The Walkathon and Pet Fair also make up the Briarcliff Manor-based SPCA’s largest fundraisers of the year. Last year, more than 2,000 residents throughout the community helped raise more than $100,000 that went toward shelter improvements, animal vaccinations and dozens of other SPCA services, said Lisa Bonanno-Spence, development manager for SPCA.

“It’s just gotten bigger and better every year and we’re hoping for another great event this year,” Bonanno-Spence said. “So many people tell us this their favorite event every year and they love coming out with their animals to have fun with all of the activities and games that are there.”

The SPCA is also set to have several animals up for adoption at the event and residents throughout the community are invited to bring their dogs to play in the park and enjoy the dog-friendly activities on-hand.

“We like to showcase the dogs there so people can see where their money is going,” Bonnano-Spence said. “We’ve always had a great response. This is really an event for everyone and perfect for families.”

Bonanno-Spence added that even though the shelter is in Briarcliff Manor and the event is in Yorktown Heights, the Walkathon and Pet Fair are geared toward families throughout Westchester.

“We take in more than 2,000 animals every year and every dollar raised at this event goes toward caring for those animals in the communities all around the county that we serve,” she said. “No matter how much you donate at the event, it all adds up to better things for our pets and animals in our community.”

Registration for the Walkathon is not required, but those interested can log on to www.spca914.org .
