BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. Briarcliff Manor resident Nicholas Deem doesnt care if it is mid-February, hes fine theres no snow on the ground.
I like to play in the grass, Nicholas, 5, said while taking a break from the swing-set at Briarcliffs Law Memorial Park Friday. I really like going high when Im swinging.
Temperatures soared above 50 degrees Friday afternoon and while it didnt set a February record, Briarcliff residents said they had to take advantage of the unusually warm winter weather. Michael Deem said he was pleasantly surprised with Fridays weather.
Its just an absolutely beautiful day for this time of year, Deem said. We had some time and I dont get that often so it was really nice to get this weather out here.
Briarcliff resident Cathy Benke brought her grandkids Alyssa Oakley, 2, and Danielle Oakley, 4, and said she was also pleasantly surprised.
You really dont get this in February, Benke said. We didnt expect this at all but were all enjoying it.
Chris Soi, recreation supervisor for the Briarcliff Manor Recreation Department, said hes seen more residents come out to enjoy the park at the beginning of this year than most winters.
There is typically almost no foot traffic in our parks in the winter but weve seen more people coming out to play or just sit in our parks than I can remember, Soi said. Weve also had a some people use our platform tennis courts already this year and thats definitely not a typical winter sport.
Soi said residents interested in using the tennis courts are asked to register for a permit at the villages recreation office at 48 Macy Road. The BMRD office is located on the bottom floor of the Briarcliff Manor Public Library.
