The cement block walls and roof of the garage on North Greeley Avenue, used to store taxi vehicles, gave out around 12:03 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at the height of the snowstorm that dropped more than a foot of snow on the Northern Westchester area.
Nobody was inside the small one-story garage when it collapsed. However, three commercial cars inside and one outside were damaged, police said. The cars are owned by Chappaqua Taxi and Limousine, which is across the street at 99 N. Greeley Avenue.
Bill Maskiell, building inspector for the Town of New Castle, said the snow could have caused the collapse.
“The roof just couldn’t stand the load anymore,” he said. “The building just let go, It was still snowing quite heavily when it let go.”
The walls were "pushed out," he said.
The garage is one of three structures on the lot owned by El-Cam Realty. They have taken out a demolition permit with the town to remove the remains of the garage. If they don’t rebuild it within two years, they will have to bring it up to current code, Maskiell said.
