BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. – Sports fans in Briarcliff had plenty to celebrate in the past 12 months, from deep playoff runs to triathletes. Here are the top sports stories from Briarcliff in 2012 :
Briarcliff Baseball Nearly Does It Again
The Briarcliff High School baseball team returned to the Class B state title game for the second time in as many years in June. Unfortunately, the Bears once again came up just short, this time with a 2-0 loss to Oneonta in the finals.
Local Golfer Continues To Impress
Fifteen-year-old Briarcliff native Cameron Young had a summer to remember. He participated in several high profile tournaments, including the 97th Met Open, in which he finished 15th but at one point sat in second place. He also won the Hochster Invitational, the Brae Burn Invitational and the Mittlemark Invitational and competed at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.
Briarcliff Native Is Ironman
Jordan Rapp won the first Ironman U.S. Championship in August in New York City. The 32-year-old finished with a time of 8:11.8. The event was a homecoming of sorts for Rapp, who now lives in California with his wife and son.
