Shields Leads Setters Women in Comeback Victory

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y-  Brittany Shields led the Pace women’s basketball team with a 25 points and 11 rebounds Friday in a thrilling come-back victory over the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas in non-conference game.

Pace improved their record to 8-3 overall, while the Spartans dropped to 7-5 on the season.

St. Thomas Aquinas came out strong and maintained a decent lead throughout the first half. The Spartans led by as many as 16 points at 33-17 with 2:51 left in the first half. Pace was able to come within ten points to head into halftime trailing 33-23.

The Setters opened the second half up with a 10-4 run to pull within four and Aquinas pushed their lead back to five points at 40-35. Pace responded again with 10-0 run that would put them in the lead. Shields (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) hit a pair of free throws and converted a three-point play with 9:30 left in the game to put the Setters up 42-40. Kerri White (Flushing, NY/Archbishop Molloy) capped the run with three-pointer to extend the Setters lead to 45-40 with 8:57 remaining in the game.

The Spartans battled back to tie the game at 56-56 with 33 seconds left. Shields hit 1-of-2 from the line with 13 seconds left, but a technical foul sent White to the line where she made 1 of 2 shots. Allison Cleary (New Windsor, NY/Cornwall Central) hit both of her free throws to ice the game and cap the second half-rally for the Setters.

The Setters will travel to Colchester, Vt. for a Northeast-10 Conference match-up against St. Michael’s College on Tuesday.
