Pace Baseball Loses First Conference Tourney Game

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Pace University’s baseball team hosted Tuesday’s opening round game of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship as the top seed but the tournament ended for Pace almost as quickly as it started.

The Setters fell to the University of New Haven Chargers, 6-0, at Finnerty Field to drop to 29-19 on the season. The Chargers advanced to the second round of the tournament.

Pace was ranked eighth in the latest NCAA East Region Poll. The top six teams in the poll advance to the NCAA Tournament.

New Haven’s Joey Royer pitched a complete game and gave up three hits while striking out four. Pace’s Neil Pezzullo threw 6 1/3 innings for Pace and gave up four runs on ten hits and struck out three. Jonathan Hornung gave up two runs on four hits in one inning, and Eddie Byrne struck out one batter in the final 1 2/3 innings.

The Chargers got on the board quickly with a run in the top of the first inning and then added three more in the fourth. New Haven scored in the seventh and eighth innings, as well.

James Pjura, Tyler Collins and Joe Solemeno each had singles for Pace.
