Briarcliff's Schwab Sets Record To Win County Swim Title

RYE, N.Y. — As Carly Schwab was heading into the final 10 yards of the girl’s 10-and-under breaststroke Monday, she did not want to have a repeat of the 2011 final.

Schwab, swimming for Sleepy Hollow Country Club, recalled that her opponent touched the wall a split second ahead of her. This time, it was Schwab who hit first.

The 10-year-old Schwab finished ahead of Kate Douglass in winning the event in the 87th annual Westchester County Swimming and Diving Championships at Playland Pool.

Schwab clocked in at 33.69 seconds with Douglass, of the New York Athletic Club, finishing at 33.91. Both erased the meet record of 34.45 seconds set by Paola Duguet in 1998. The girls eclipsed the standard in their heat as Schwab established a new mark of 33.52 seconds with Douglass at 34.21 seconds.

“I had been training hard,” said Schwab, a fifth-grader-to-be at Todd Elementary School in Briarcliff. “I knew it was going to be a close race so I was hoping for the best.”

Schwab and Douglass were swimming stroke for stroke in the final when Schwab noticed something.

“I saw that her arm was a little ahead of mine so I knew I had to push harder,” she said. “I started to pick up my arm speed. When I finished, the first thing I did was turn around and look. And when I saw Lane 4 and I saw the ‘1’ next to it, I was really excited to know that I won.”
