Briarcliff's Ryan Levy Qualifies for Sectional Swim Meet

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Westlake boys’ swimming coach Anthony Pizzolla had two of his players leave unexpectedly on Friday against Rye. One ninth-grader fell ill, while another swimmer had to leave due to an emergency.

Still, Pizzolla was pleased with his team’s performance.

“In spite of all that, we did very well,” Pizzolla said. “I’m very happy.”

Rye (1-0) defeated Westlake, 100-84, at Hommocks Middle School on Friday afternoon. It was the first meet of the year for both the Garnets and the Wildcats (0-1).

Two members of the Westlake team, which includes students from Byram Hills, Pleasantville, Mount Pleasant and Briarcliff, qualified for other meets with their performances on Friday.

Junior Ruan Zorgman from Pleasantville qualified for the state meet in the 100-yard breaststroke with his time of 1:00.65. Ryan Levy from Briarcliff High School qualified for sectionals in one meter diving with a score of 195.

Rye coach Chris Dewey said his team chose to focus on individual performances rather than points in this meet, but the races worked out in their favor regardless.

“Coming into this meet, we didn’t know what to expect,” Dewey said.

Dewey said that at least two of his swimmers qualified for sectionals, but he chose to withhold the times until the next meet, at which he said his swimmers will try to qualify for the state meet.

Rye now has a quick turnaround and will swim against Keio Academy on Tuesday with no practice on Monday. Despite the short time between meets, Dewey said his team has been preparing for meets for the past week and will be ready for Tuesday’s competition.

“We’re going to get on the bus like any other meet,” Dewey said. “(We have to) swim our best at a different pool. That’s the roughest part sometimes.”
