HARRISON, N.Y. The Briarcliff Little League 11/12 baseball team did everything it could to overcome a massive deficit on Sunday morning but ultimately fell just short of a win.
Poughkeepsie led, 10-3, in the fifth inning of the Section 4 Williamsport Tournament at Brentwood Park in Harrison. Briarcliff scored twice in the top of the fifth and three times in the sixth but left the tying run on base and Poughkeepsie escaped with a 10-8 win.
Like we do, we hit their second best pitcher pretty good, said Briarcliff coach Chris Ryan. We made too many errors. We walked too many guys in that second inning We just dug ourselves a hole that was too big to come out of.
But Briarcliff almost did come out of it and nearly took the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Poughkeepsie took a 10-5 lead into the sixth and Briarcliff hit two solo home runs to cut the lead to three. Another RBI trimmed the lead to 10-8.
Briarcliff nearly had a three-run homer to take the lead. The crowd rose to its feet as the ball clearly had the distance for a home run, but it sailed wide right of the foul pole in right field. The final out of the game was a long fly ball to right field that nearly gave Briarcliff the lead.
Ryan had different opinions of the two home runs from his vantage point.
I could see from my angle that (the first one) was going to be a foul ball, Ryan said. I thought the last play of the game, Noah hit one down the line. I thought that had a legitimate chance to go out. It was probably five to ten feet from doing that. Thats the game.
Briarcliff will face the loser of the New Rochelle-Stony Point game, which immediately followed Briarcliffs game, on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Pat Henry Field in Valhalla in the losers bracket of the double elimination tournament.
