Briarcliff Irons Out Football Merger With Elmsford

BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. - The Briarcliff School District is putting the finishing touches on an athletic merger with the Elmsford School District that will give Hamilton High School its first football program in more than 20 years and help keep Briarcliff High School's team alive.

Briarcliff Board of Education Vice President Jennifer Rosen said at last week's board meeting that one final step for the merger was making sure students from both schools will be covered under the same policy, especially in regard to injuries.

"We just don't want to have a situation where a child from Elmsford has a concussion and there's a question as to which school doctor or medical trainer that would fall under," Rosen said. "We want to make sure that the team is covered under one policy."

Elmsford students will be required to comply with the Briarcliff Athletic Code of Conduct and will be subject to Briarcliff's rules and regulations in order to participate.

Both school districts approved the merger that will take place in the fall of 2013. Under the agreement, Elmsford will be required to pay for transportation costs and two assistant coaches, which the district believes will cost about $40,000 a year.

For Briarcliff, allowing students from Elmsford to participate in their football program will help keep the program - which was struggling to field enough players - intact.

Hamilton Athletic Director Robert Pollok said the merger made sense for both parties.

"Kids have been asking me for years and years," said Pollok in The Greenburgh Daily Voice's story about creating a football team. "They're merging to save the program; we're merging to eventually begin our own."

Briarcliff Superintendent Neal Miller said Athletic Director Chris Drosopoulos is currently working on the schedule for the team, which should be finalized soon.
