The Briarcliff baseball team has so many ups and downs during games this season that the Bears may have a decided advantage when they compete in the New York State Public Schools Class B Final Four this weekend.
Having trailed early in 16 games of a 20-plus game season, including the Section 1 and regional title games played over the last week, the Bears are no longer faint of heart when games are close or in doubt.
We just keep going and never give up no matter what, said back-up catcher Brad Fox, whose three-run double in the 9-1 regional semifinal romp over Spackenkill was his first varsity hit. Guys on the bench are into it and everyone helps out, so we know we can win games even if were behind.
Briarcliff trailed 4-1 in the Section 1 final and 3-0 and 8-6 in the regional final before winning to advance.
Were on a roll right now, winning games and making things happen, said Josh Miller, who threw seven innings in the 9-1 win and relieved John Henshaw in the seventh a day later in the -8 win over Spackenkill. We are confident that we can overcome after were behind. We have a lot of confidence in each other.
Briarcliffs next opportunity for advancement in its heart-stopping run is a meeting with Section 6 representative Dunkirk in the state semifinal round in Binghamton, Saturday, June 10 at 10 a.m.
