BRIARCLIFF, NY -- Within a span of five minutes, Southern Dutchess transformed a close game into its firm command against Briarcliff Tuesday. The District 17 representative scored five runs with two outs in the bottom of the third inning on its way to a 12-2 victory in the Big League Baseball Section 4 final at Briarcliff High School.
It is the second time in many days that Southern Dutchess beat Briarcliff. Southern Dutchess advances to the New York State Championship, Friday through Monday, July 13, at Briarcliff High School.
Briarcliff trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the third inning. Starter Michael Schwartz, an Ossining resident, retired the first two hitters on fine plays by third baseman Zach Ship and right fielder Jackson Plimpton, respectively. However, Cory Grossman and Nicholas Lupo worked out walks and Southern Dutchess followed with four consecutive hits.
Winning pitcher Blake Coalla initiated with a two-run double to the 350-foot marker on the left-center-field wall. Briarcliff found itself in a quick 2-0 hole after one inning, but evened the score in the second inning. Paul Henshaw led off with a walk. One batter later, Patrick Leyden, a Pleasantville resident, ripped a two-run homer to right field. Anthony Lafiandra, of Ossining, laced a two-out single up the middle. Plimpton stepped in and lined a shot down the third-base line, but Southern Dutchess third baseman Mike Laffin dove to his right and stole a sure double from Plimpton.
