ELMSFORD, N.Y. – Robots took over the Alice B. Grady School gym Saturday.
“It's all really designed to get kids experienced and excited about math, engineering, science and technology,” John Houston said.
Houston is the assistant director of Hudson Valley First Lego League. Students from around the Hudson Valley, including Elmsford and the Hackley School, competed Saturday in a Hudson Valley First Lego League robotics competition.
The competition, for kids between the ages of nine and 14, challenged students to find ways to improve senior citizens' lives, such as walking up stairs, Houston said. Kids are asked to meet with a senior citizen and discuss specific challenges and difficulties they face, Houston said.
Kids also competed by building robots and demonstrating them Saturday. Each robot team was given 2 1/2 minutes to tackle a problem based on this year's theme of senior citizens. Points were awarded based on what the robot was able to do.
