New Todd Teachers Bringing Energy To Briarcliff

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – New Briarcliff Manor teachers Kristie Malley and Therese McAteer say they couldn't be more excited for the start of the new school year this week.

“The last month has been pretty intense,” said Malley, a new fourth-grade teacher at Todd Elementary School. “We've been coming in every day for a while just to get the rooms ready and learn about the district. I’m really excited to see the kids.”

Malley and McAteer, who also is starting a fourth-grade teaching position at Todd, each come to the district from Orange County where they worked for five years. The pair finished new teacher orientation last week, but McAteer said she’s been working on preparing since June.

“I started coming in since two days after the end of last year and I’ve been here every single day,” she said, adding that she finished out the school year in Briarcliff Manor in a leave replacement position at Todd. “That’s taken a little bit of the edge off of the anxiety. But I’m very excited to finally have my own classroom and see the students throughout the whole school year.”

Knowing each other has helped ease the transition for both of them.

“Having someone else to help and someone to go through all of this has been great,” McAteer said. “It can be very time-consuming and tough to do it alone so it was nice having that extra support. I think a lot of times teachers will become set in their ways so it’s nice to go through this with someone who is also bringing a fresh perspective to this.”

Malley said the faculty and staff at Briarcliff have made a big difference in preparing for the year.

“Even in Orange County you hear about Briarcliff and all of the amazing opportunities they have and the technologies available,” Malley said. “It’s really nice to have a chance to work with all of these things. And the people who work here have been amazing in helping us the whole way.”
