BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. -- Japanese drumming group Taikoza performed recently at Todd Elementary School during the PTA-sponsored Multicultural Awareness Day.
“Through our Multicultural Committee, we can expose our children to different experiences,” said event organizer and English as a second language teacher LeeLee Wong. “The children might be too young to travel, so we’re bringing the world to school with the hope that this will increase their global awareness.”
The New York-based group gave the students a preview of Japanese music and dance using traditional instruments such as barrel-like drums. Students learned to say a few words in Japanese and some, such as first-grader Max Amador, were chosen to drum onstage. Other children air drummed along from the audience. According to Max, the drumsticks were heavy and the performers had to be strong.
