Briarcliff High School hosted a Valentine's Day Tea Time for seniors last week that featured singing, dancing and performing. Students got a chance to meet with the seniors, many of whom were longtime Briarcliff residents and had children and grandchildren who attended the high school.
The event was organized by Briarcliff High's Student Council, whose members served cookies, tea and egg salad sandwiches.
"This is a great opportunity for students to get to know the senior and establish a close connection," said Olivia Segal, who helped organize the event.
Segal said many students are friends only with people in their age group.
"They limit themselves," Segal said. "It's nice to speak to people who are a little wiser."
Sam Martocci, who also helped organize the event, said she was enjoying the event.
"It's really nice to sit and talk with them," Martocci said.
Ruth Kelmar attended the event with her husband, Leo. Her grandchildren attend Briarcliff High School.
"This is very nice," Kelmar said. "I love seeing the students."
Principal Deborah French said the senior citizens are a huge part of the Briarcliff community.
"The students gain so much from talking to them," French said. "I am very happy; this has been a lovely afternoon."
Emma Calame-Pennington did an interpretive dance to Nina Simone's "Strange Fruit," while the Briarcliff Drama Club did a reading of several short plays, and Kelly Hooper performed a song from "Pippin."
"They are really nice kids," Regina Pohar, one of the seniors said. "They are very talented and so well-rounded."
