BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. -- Six Briarcliff High School students recently attended the United Nations Rotary Day in New York City, along with students from around the country and world.

“The theme of the day was ‘Gift to the World,’ meaning that one individual can be a gift to the world,” said club advisor Pamela Gordon. “Each one of us can make a difference.”

The day featured several speakers who talked about what the Rotary has accomplished to date and its plans for the future.

In 1985, the Rotary took on the goal of eliminating polio in the world by vaccinating all children; today, only two countries (Afghanistan and Pakistan) still have the polio virus.

The new mission is gender equality throughout the world, and Rotary members are hoping to achieve this by 2030.

“All of the presentations were very informative for all who attended,” said Gordon, who noted that the day was made possible by the Briarcliff Manor Rotary Club.

Rotary International is an international service organization whose stated human rights purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and to advance goodwill and peace around the world.
