Briarcliff Literary Magazine Wins Top National Awards

BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. -- The 2015 edition of Briarcliff High School’s literary magazine, "Briars & Ivy," has earned top recognition from several organizations.

“Please join me in congratulating the Briars & Ivy staff on an outstanding job for the 2015 edition of the BHS literary arts magazine,” said Karen McCarthy, the publication’s advisor. “It is clear from the national and state awards garnered in this award season that there is much to be applauded in the written and artistic work of the BHS student body. Under the direction of editor-in- chief, alumnus Olivia Segal, the Briars & Ivy staff put together a phenomenal edition.” 

The publication’s awards include: 

  •  National Scholastic Press Association — First Class
  • American Scholastic Press Association — First Place Overall
  • Empire State Scholastic Press Association: Overall – Gold
  • National Council of Teachers of English Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines — Superior Award
  • Columbia Scholastic Press Association — Silver Medalist
  • Several students also won individual awards in the following categories:
  • Artwork/Illustration: David Kaminsky, "Chian Mai Elephant" - Gold
  • Cover Design: Olivia Segal - Bronze
  • Fiction: Olivia Segal: "A Walk in the Woods" - Honorable Mention
  • Layout (Facing Pages): Anastasia Friedland and Sam Simpson, "Eurydice and Orpheus" - Honorable Mention
  • Layout (Facing Pages): Sarah Kaul and Amanda Gryga, "Shopaholics" – Honorable Mention
  • Photograph: Harrison Isaac, "Pyromania" - Silver

  • Poetry (Division B): Jillian Agona, "Hollow Bones" - Bronze
