The Briarcliff Manor Education Foundation’s Teacher Tribute Program, which raises funds to help teachers attend conferences and programs, is under way through Jan. 1. The program allows residents to donate to the Teacher's Institute, “a professional development arm of the Foundation, which provides teachers with the opportunity to attend conferences and programs to stay abreast of current trends in their areas of expertise,” according to a press release.

The program has raised about $4,000 in each of the last seven years, said foundation co-President Liz Susman-Karp.

“It’s a way for parents to recognize a teacher and at the same time support the BMEF,” she said. “It’s a really nice thing for the teachers to feel that recognition from parents. I think the number of donations we receive are a testament to the wonderful teachers and staff we have in Briarcliff.”

Susman-Karp added that the program allows for donations to specific teachers, who will receive certificates and holiday chocolates.

“It’s a wonderful and generous way to support the schools,” she said. “What I’ve found is that the teachers are very grateful to have this opportunity.”

Nancy Kress, French and Spanish teacher at Briarcliff Middle School, recently attended the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers annual conference and expressed her appreciation for the program.

“With this new knowledge, I am able to not only enhance my classroom lessons and curriculum to keep it current and dynamic, but also turnkey that information to my World Language Department colleagues to help them stay current and dynamic,” Kress said in a press release. “The BMEF Teacher’s Institute grants enable Briarcliff teachers to attend important professional development workshops and conferences that help stimulate our curiosity, creativity and keep us connected to our craft.  We are very grateful for generosity.”
