Briarcliff Approves Todd Elementary Playground

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – Briarcliff Manor residents said yes Tuesday to a new playground at Todd Elementary School.

The community approved the district’s proposal to spend $160,000 on construction of a new playground for the kindergarten through second-grade students at Todd by a vote of 139 to 39. Officials said the playground would be constructed by the second week of September. Construction is set to replace the aging playground that was removed earlier this year.

Funding for the construction is set to come out of unassigned fund balance.

Officials discovered earlier this year they could not authorize more than $10,000 on construction of new playground equipment without a public vote.

Parent Nichole Culotta said she voted in favor of the proposal because she has three kids in the school district who are younger than 8 years old.

“They need something back there to play on,” Culotta said. “Hopefully it is going to keep them occupied and having fun.”

Guy Rotondo, former Briarcliff School Board president, said he voted in favor of the proposal.

The plans include the removal of all pea gravel and placement of the structure on a new rubberized fall zone area similar to that of the grades three to five playground. The proposed playground design was previously chosen by a committee of teachers and parents with a focus on early childhood education.

Board Vice President Jennifer Rosen said previously the timing was not ideal but added that the proposal was necessary.

“It’s more important for us to get the playground in before school starts,” Rosen said in June.
