BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. The Con Edison work stoppage is hitting the streets of Briarcliff Manor, or rather the street lights.
Village Manager Philip Zegarelli said the recently installed street lamps on North State Road could take months to turn on due to a backlog of work orders with Con Ed. Zegarelli said the village filed a work order to connect the street lamps in June but officials were told there would be delays due to the recent work stoppage that locked out 8,500 union workers after contract talks broke down on July 1.
Im sure were one of hundreds of work orders that are essentially shelved, he said. They have to keep the power on and thats how it goes. This is probably not the most essential work order to them and Im hoping that theyre working on other ones that they see are more important. Thats the way it goes.
Zegarelli said he does not expect the lights to turn on any time soon.
They are so far behind now on work orders that it could be a long time, Zegarelli said Tuesday. We dont know when its going to happen but Im hoping in a month or two. Its very important for them to keep the power on than it is to make sure we have four new lights lit. So I hope people will understand that.
Two Briarcliff Manor boys aged 15 and 16 were charged with felony vandalism in April after they marked up setting concrete in the repairs on North State Road. The boys were ordered to pay $16,320 in restitution to the village to repair the work. Briarcliff Manor crews finished the project, which included the newly installed lights, in June. Zegarelli said that because the lights have not been connected, the village is not being charged for electricity to the area on North State Road.
