YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- The prescription drug disposal unit in Yorktown set up by the Alliance for Safe Kids and the Yorktown Police Department recently is doing what it can to help fight the opioid epidemic.

On Tuesday, the Yorktown Police Department disposed of 212 pounds of prescription and over-the-counter drugs. The unit was installed in May of 2012 and has since collected 2,834 lbs of drugs from the medicine cabinets of local residents – about 46 lbs a month.

More than 70 percent of young people abusing prescription pain relievers get them through friends or family.

The collection site is open 24-7 at the Yorktown Police Department and drugs can be left with no questions asked. Tablets, capsules, and patches can be dropped off but not liquids, needles or syringes.
