Kieran O'Leary, a spokesman for the Westchester County Police, said Thursday the Westchester County Marine Unit has shifted from a search and rescue to a recovery effort for 47-year-old Alex DeSouza, a Brooklyn resident and that the search has grown less intense in recent days.

D'Souza and two other men were fishing in Croton Point Park at Teller's Point when D'Souza decided to go for a swim. The two other men called 911 at 10:45 a.m. after seeing D'Souza go under and not resurface, police said.

Police said currents were strong Tuesday morning and that D'Souza was swimming in a prohibited area. The only place people are currently allowed to swim is at the beach at Croton Point Park on weekends when lifeguards are present, police said .
