Rabbi Accused Of Impersonating Cop Blames Bipolar Disorder

LARCHMONT, N.Y. – A Larchmont rabbi accused of impersonating a police officer on several occasions apologized for any alarm or discomfort his behavior may have caused, citing bipolar disorder as the reason for his "manic behavior," according to a statement issued by his lawyer.

The rabbi formerly of Congregation Sulam Yaakov in Larchmont was charged with impersonating a police officer.

Alfredo Borodowski, a White Plains resident and rabbi of Congregation Sulam Yaakov in Larchmont, was charged in June with impersonating an officer after a 24-year-old woman said he tried to pull her over on Mamaroneck Avenue.

A statement issued by Borodowski’s lawyer Andrew Rubin, of White Plains-based firm Mancuso, Rubin & Fufidio, said the rabbi has received mental health treatment for the past several years.

He was receiving intensive appropriate treatment and medication for the mental disorder and was hospitalized for several weeks, the statement said. “His condition is not being offered as an excuse but rather as an explanation for his unusual behavior,” the statement said.

Since news of Borodowski’s arrest, several other people have come forward, complaining that he tried to pull them over on the road to rage at them over traffic nuisances, CBS News reported.  He is reportedly being investigated in at least two more instances in which police say he allegedly tried to pull people over for cutting him off or driving too slowly, the report said.

“Rabbi Borodowski has served the Jewish community as a rabbi and a teacher for many years and looks forward to returning to serve his community as soon as his bipolar disorder is properly and effectively treated,” the legal statement said.

According to CBS, police confiscated a fake badge that Borodowski was allegedly carrying, which reportedly read, “Tri-borough Bridge and Tunnel Authority Officer 1338.”

Borodowski was recently fired from his position as executive director of Temple Emanu-El’s Skirball Center for Jewish Learning in Manhattan, one of the world's largest Jewish houses of worship, according to CBS.
