Following a national trend, police departments in the Hudson Valley have taken to social media to encourage homeowners to ensure their cars and homes are locked, with valuables secure and out of sight.

According to police in Haverstraw, many larcenies from vehicles occur when they are left unlocked or valuables are left in open view, such as purses on the front seat.

“In our busy lives, sometimes all we need is a friendly reminder,” they noted when announcing their participation in the '9 p.m. Routine.' “So can you please help us spread the word by sharing our post so we can prevent as much crime as possible.”

In Ossining, the police officials advised homeowners to leave outside lights on, as well-lit areas are less conducive to criminal behavior. They began promoting their "9 p.m. Routine" late in September after a series of unlocked cars were ransacked.
