Mark Sands, 73, Of Briarcliff Manor, Owned Insurance Agency

CALABASH, N.C. - Mark Sands of Calabash died Tuesday, April 16. He was 73.

Sands was born in New York City, and was the son of Joseph and Beulah Ovenden Sands. He attended New York City schools and CW Post College and served his country in the U.S. Army. He was an insurance agent with the Goodhart Agency in Yonkers before opening the Sands, Bernardo and Fee Insurance Agency in Briarcliff Manor.

He was past president and a Paul Harris Fellow of the Yonkers Rotary Club. He was also a past chairman and longtime member of the Yonkers Salvation Army Advisory Board. He was a former president of the Yonkers Independent Insurance Agents.  He was involved with the American Cancer Society-Westchester Division and United Way. He was a former board member of the Yonkers Rehabilitation Center and also Yonkers General Hospital.

Before moving to North Carolina, Sands was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Shrub Oak, and prior to that a member of St. John's Tuckahoe in Yonkers.

Sands is survived by his wife, Patricia Paul; his sons, Robert (Vanessa) Sands, Ian (Kimberly) Sands; his daughters, Vivian (Hans Christoph) Rossbach, Tania (Donald) Ulinski, Markelle (Walter) Urtz; and 12 grandchildren.

Calling hours are Friday, April 26 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Flynn Memorial Home, 1652 Central Ave., Yonkers.  Funeral services will be held Saturday morning time to be announced at the Flynn Memorial Home. Interment will follow at the Kensico cemetery in Valhalla.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Sands name to the American Diabetes Association.
