Winter Hikes, Eggs For Weekend Around Briarcliff

OSSINING, N.Y. – This weekend you can kick off the New Year by looking for winter wildlife while taking a hike, listening to winter stories by the fire, or collecting eggs laid by hens. Here are the details:

Friday

Fireside Winter Stories for Kids, 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Gather around a warm fireplace at Teatown Lake Reservation's Carriage house to listen to a winter-themed story, visit with one of Teatown's Animal Ambassadors or go for a short walk outside. The program is targeted for children 4 to 7-years-old accompanied by an adult. The cost is $5 per child and adults are free. Teatown Lake Reservation is located at 1600 Spring Valley Rd.

Saturday

Snug Beneath the Snow, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Learn the survival strategies of animals and plants that use snow as an insulator, then take a short hike through Teatown Lake Reservation to look for animals' winter homes. The program is free for members and $5 for non-members.

A Sea Change, 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

A film about a grandfather's odyssey to understand ocean acidification will be shown at the Budarz Theater in the Ossining Public Library at 53 Croton Ave. Film makers Barbara Ettinger and Sven Huseby will host a question-and-answer session afterwards and there will be a reception at 2 p.m. at the Wobble Café at 21 Campwoods Rd. The program is free.

Hands on the Farm: Egg Collecting, Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and 12 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Learn about the life of a hen and collect eggs at Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture at 630 Bedford Rd., Pocantico Hills. This program is targeted to children ages 2 to 14 accompanied by adults. All participants must wear closed-toe shoes. The cost is $7 per person.

Sunday

Hike in the New Year, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Take a hike to Vernay Lake in Teatown Lake Reservation to look for ice formations along the Waterfall Trail and circle Teatown Lake in search of winter wildlife, and then toast the New Year with a hot drink. The program is for adults only. The event is free for members and $5 for non-members.
