Westchester Students Face Mumps Outbreak At Fordham University

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Fordham University is attempting to contain an outbreak of mumps on its Bronx campus that has infected eight students so far, according to ABC New York.

Infected students have reportedly been either isolated or sent home. All of the students were infected despite having prior vaccinations against the mumps, according to the article.

No cases have been reported so far at Fordham's Westchester campus in West Harrison.

Mumps is a viral infection. The symptoms are:

Fever
Headache
Muscle aches
Tiredness
Loss of appetite
Swollen and tender salivary glands under the ears or jaw on one or both sides of the face (parotitis)

Mumps is spread from person to person through contact with respiratory secretions, such as saliva and sneeze droplets, from an infected person. Items used by an infected person, such as cups, utensils, etc., can also be contaminated with the virus and should not be shared.
