The trees first became an issue for the airport in 1989 when the Federal Aviation Administration forced them to close off 1,300 feet of the runway, but as time has progressed, the trees have grown and only exacerbated the issue, The New York Times said.
If something isn't done by next year, a new federal mandate will force the airport to close off another 300 feet of the runway, rendering it unusable, The Times reported.
