BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. With a hand-made "open" sign posted on their window, Value Drugs pharmacy was the only business open on Tuesday morning out of all the businesses in two complexes at the corner of North State Road and Route 9A.
Operating on several electric generators, the drug store had lights on above several aisles of merchandise and above the cashier and pharmacy.
"Customers are starting to trickle in now. We've had a very positive response with lots of people thanking us yesterday for being open," said store manager Ken Elliott.
According to a Con Edison website, 1,203 customers out of 2,964 total customers in Briarcliff Manor are still without power following Hurricane Irene. The estimated time by which power should be restored is Thursday at 11:59 p.m.
In the Town of Ossining, 505 customers out of 2,307 total customers are still without power, and in the village of Ossining, 510 out of 8,980 total customers are without power. As with Briarcliff, the estimated time by which power should be restored is Thursday at 11:59 p.m.
"My mother is without power and with flooding. I've been washing all her wet towels for the last 24 hours," said Jessica Hoyer of Ridgecrest Road in Briarcliff who came to Value Drugs with her nine-year-old daughter and six-year-old son to pick up school supplies. "We've been emptying out her freezer and having her stay over at our house."
Elliott said a number of parents who came in to pick up school supply packages for their children in Todd Elementary School complained that they had cabin fever.
"There's nothing to do up (where I am)," said Veronica Belen of Putnam Valley who drove to Briarcliff to try to shop at Mrs. Green's organic supermarket which was closed due to lack of electricity.
When she saw that it was open, Belen came next door to Value Drugs and killed some time picking out a "happy anniversary" card for her husband since it was her anniversary on Tuesday.
"I've been going to my family's house for showers. I have some food in the refrigerator that I'll have to get rid of tonight and tonight we'll eat at my family's house," Belen said.
