Mamaroneck authorities found the boy dead in the arms of his mother, Manuela Maria Morgado, in October. Morgado was later charged with the death and pleaded not guilty in December in White Plains County Court.

Jake’s father, Dr. Tim Reish, who sat in the courtroom with his wife, said after the arraignment that he would continue to show up until there is justice for his son.

“I don’t want his memory to be forgotten,” he said. “As painful as this process is for my whole family, we’ll be here for the whole process.”

Morgado had been in a custody dispute with Tim Reish, who lives in Briarcliff Manor. She told police responding to her home at 1030 E. Post Road Oct. 1 that she killed her son because she didn't want anyone to take him from her, Det. Bernard McNally of the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department testified at an Oct. 17 felony hearing.

More than 100 people mourned Jake's death at his wake and funeral in October. Tim Reish said in October that he would “never be able to comprehend the heinous actions of Jake’s mother.”

“We would like to thank everyone for your kindness and support during this most difficult time,” the family wrote in the funeral program. “In the short time Jake was with us, he changed our lives for the better. He will live on in the memories of all who met him, and we will be reunited with him one day.”
