Throw Away Prescription Drugs Safely in Ossining

OSSINING, N.Y. – The Ossining Police Department is promoting the safe disposal of outdated and unused prescription drugs for National Drug Prescription Take Back Day this weekend.

On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., people can dispose of unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs, including over-the-counter drugs, in the Village Court lobby at 86 Spring St.

"This program is an effort to prevent such controlled substances and other drugs from being abused, particularly by vulnerable youths in the community," police said in a press release. "Such drugs present a health hazard both from the standpoint of abuse as well as accidental overdose."

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, seven million Americans currently abuse prescription medications and most of the abused prescription drugs are obtained from family, friends and the home medicine cabinet.

Police are participating in the drug disposal program in conjunction with Health Smart and Ossining Communities That Care.
