Steady Flow of Voters On Election Day In Ossining

OSSINING, N.Y. – After casting her votes along the Democratic party line on Tuesday afternoon, Phyllis Smith said she thinks it is important to keep up the quality of life in Ossining.

"I'm pretty happy about the way things are going in the village. I think we need to keep the good things going, like the pool and the library," she said. Smith said there is nobody in the six contested local races for state supreme court justice district 9, county legislator district 9, town supervisor, town council, village board and town justice, that she feels strongly about voting for.

"I'm just doing my civil duty," she said as she walked towards the exit of the polling place in the gymnasium of the Joseph G. Caputo community center.

Doris McClean, a poll worker at the Ossining community center, said there had been a steady flow of people coming in to vote since polls opened at 6 a.m. on Tuesday. By 2 p.m., about 85 people had casted votes at the community center. "We're doing pretty good, I think. There haven't been any problems," she said.

Her co-worker, Florence Didomizio, noted that turn out was a lot better on Tuesday than it was for the primary elections on Sept. 13. "It's a beautiful day," said Gerald Zuckerman after he slid his ballot into a ballot scanner. "I like the machines, I like the setup."

Zuckerman said he is an independent and he voted mostly along the Independence party line. Carl Zymet, a veterinarian who owns Zymet Animal Hospital on South Highland Avenue, said he always comes out to vote because he thinks it is important.

"I'm not too happy with the way things are going. There are a lot of people out of jobs, out of work," he said. "There are a lot of poor people even in Westchester county."

Cindy Pober, a resident of Ossining for 21 years, said she doesn't like the high taxes she has to pay, but other than that she doesn't have many complaints. "We get good service. All the roads are ploughed quickly," she said. To choose her candidates, Pober mostly went with the Democratic party line.
