Second-Half School Taxes Due Tuesday

OSSINING, N.Y. - The second half payments of annual school taxes in Ossining and Briarcliff Manor are due by the end of Tuesday.

The Town of Ossining's Receiver of Taxes office at 16 Croton Ave. will be open until 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Payments can also be made online or by mail as long as an official U.S. postmark is affixed to the envelope.

Ossining Receiver of Taxes Gloria Fried said she had already received 14 online payments Monday morning. The first half was due in September.

"I will send another email message out and that will bring in a flood," Fried said. "The second half is a little different because a lot of people like to get it on their income taxes so they pay in December. It's not quite as bad as September."

Fried noted she had also received about 200 postdated checks for Jan. 31, which the state comptroller now permits.

If payment is not received by the end of Tuesday, a 10 percent penalty will be imposed in the months of February and March and a 12 percent penalty will be imposed for every month after that. If any property owner has delinquent taxes, current taxes must be paid first.

Tax liens in Ossining were down last year by 53 as compared to 2010, according to Fried, who noted 117 liens were issued in 2011.

"It's already much better this year than last year," Fried said.
