Saw Mill Parkway Gunshot Victim Accidentally Shot Himself, Police Say

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- A White Plains man who told Westchester County Police that he was shot during a robbery on the Saw Mill River Parkway on Monday has been charged with falsely reporting an incident and obstruction after authorities determined he accidentally shot himself, according to officials.

Detectives have concluded that Juan Gell, 21, of South Lexington Avenue accidentally shot himself in his midsection when he was standing with a group of people outside a car that had run out of gas. Gell subsequently concocted a story that he was shot during a robbery and provided county police with a description of a man he said had robbed him, police said.

The incident occurred about 5:45 a.m. on the northbound Saw Mill River Parkway near the westbound Cross County Parkway in Yonkers. Gell was taken to Gell was transferred later that day to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla. After being released on Wednesday, Gell was charged and released on $1,000 bail, police said.
