SantaCon To Bring Holiday Goodwill To Tarrytown

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Santa is described as having a belly that shakes like a bowl full of jelly, but it's probably safe to say that on Friday it will shake more like a bowl full of beer.

Five local residents are organizing their own SantaCon, where people dress up as Santa and go bar crawling. The group plans to “pop into a handful of local bars and contribute to the holiday chaos and joy,” according to the event's Facebook page .

“It's a festive bar crawl where everyone gets to be Santa (or at least some version of Santa),” organizers Jeannette Ho, Megan Kielar, Terri Fehn, Jeanne Cohane and Kelly McGuire wrote on the Facebook event. “So get your Santa, elf or reindeer on and spread some cheer and goodwill.”

The first SantaCon began in San Francisco in 1994 and was sponsored by the San Francisco Cacophony Society. The event has since spread around the globe.

The Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow SantaCon is set for Friday, and organizers are promoting the event on Facebook. The meet-up location for the event will be announced on Facebook on Thursday.

Organizers also suggest participants bring a $10 donation or toy, which will be donated to the Blythedale Children’s Hospital Toy Drive.

Local bar owners are excited about the event as well.

“I think it's a great idea,” Set Back Inn owner Scott Toth said.

The Set Back Inn is one of several bars and restaurants that will take part in the event. Toth said the bar will have a shot or drink for all the Santas and people will be able to make a donation to the event's chosen charity.

The bartenders at the Set Back Inn will be in festive clothing, but Toth wasn't sure if he was going to the event. However, he praised the event's organizers.

“The crew is out to help less fortunate people,” he said, “and I'm glad we could participate.”

Residents are also getting into the experience, with several expressing their support on the group's Facebook page. About 60 people have confirmed their attendance on Facebook. About 40 more are on the fence.

“It's going to be epic!” Deidre Dobson Carsto wrote on the event's Facebook page .

The SantaCon will coincide with Third Friday in Tarrytown. In addition to SantaCon's caroling, the Tappan Zee Bridgemen will be on hand to perform holiday music.
