He was the recipient of our first Vision Award in 2005, has delighted our audiences through Q&As following screenings of his films, and has been an important voice in our educational mission," said founder and executive director of the JBFC Steve Apkon in a statement.

The announcement comes as the Burns Center celebrates its tenth anniversary.

Howard said in a statement that he is looking forward to his opportunities as a member of the Board.

"Having been involved with the Center for so many years, I am excited and honored to join the Board," said Howard. "I remember years ago sitting in a room discussing with Steve and several faculty members the relevance of [the film center's] approach to education given the world we live in today. I believe in the guiding principles behind both their education and film programs and I want to help explore new partnerships that broaden their reach,"

Howard will also represent a co-chair on the board that will put together the Center's tribute to Steven Spielberg, which will take place on September 17.
