Police ID Possible Briarcliff Bank Robbery Suspect

Police believe a man who is already charged with robbing a bank in New York City may also have been responsible for a recent similar crime in Briarcliff, according to the Briarcliff Police Department.

The Chase bank on Pleasantville Road was robbed of $1,900 on May 27, accorrding to Lt. Donald Gorey of the Briarcliff PD.

Briarciff officials were tipped to suspect Kevin Johnson of the Bronx after he is alleged to have attempted a similar robbery at a New York City bank June 3, Gorey said. He was charged with attempted robbery in that case, police said.

After the Briarcliff robbery, the local police released a flyer describing the robbery and members of the New York City Police Department notified Briarcliff authorities because of the similarities in the two crimes, Gorey said. In both instances the thief threatened he had a gun but did not show it, police explained.

Briarcliff Detective Matt Doherty went to New York City to interview Johnson, and based on the interview, Briarcliff police linked Johnson to the Chase robbery, police said.

Police said Johnson is being held without bail in New York City and is expected to be charged with the Briarcliff crime if he is released on bail.
